Should I repair, upgrade or replace my old solar system?
Choose based on the fault, remaining equipment life, compatibility and what you need the system to do next.
Repair can be sensible when testing shows one isolated fault, such as an inverter or isolator issue, while the panels, mounting, cabling and switchboard remain in good condition. Check warranty coverage and whether approved compatible parts are available.
An upgrade may suit a working but undersized system when you have added air-conditioning, a pool, heat pump, EV or battery. The installer must check roof space, the existing inverter and panel strings, current network approval, export limits, switchboard capacity and whether the new and old equipment can operate together. Adding panels is not always a plug-in job.
Full replacement becomes easier to justify when equipment is damaged or unsupported, there are multiple faults, the layout is poor, major electrical work is already required or the old design cannot support the capacity, monitoring or battery features you need.
Ask for three written options where practical:
- repair and expected remaining life
- partial upgrade with all compatibility work
- complete replacement after current incentives
Do not remove working equipment solely to chase a rebate.
