How do I know if a roller shutter quote is fair?

Compare available offers against the same written specification. If the product, installation, electrical work, exclusions, timing and warranty are not clear, ask for clarification before using price to decide. A low, middle or high price can all be appropriate for different scopes.
What the spec should pin down on every quote:
- Slat type and brand. Single-skin aluminium vs double-skin foam-filled. Brand matters (Australian Trade Coil, Aluxor, Australian Outdoor Living, etc.).
- Slat profile thickness. 39 mm, 41 mm, 55 mm. The bigger the number, the heavier-duty and better-insulating.
- Operation type and motor brand. Manual, hard-wired electric, battery, solar. For electric: Somfy, Becker, Simu, or generic, and the motor warranty length.
- Box dimensions and colour. "Painted to match" should be specified. Otherwise you'll end up with cream against your charcoal trim.
- Guide colour and finish. Powder coat colour code, not just "white".
- Bottom rail and locks. Anti-lift, locking, or basic?
- Inclusions: measure, manufacture, install, removal of old, scaffolding if needed, electrical work, painting, switches, remotes.
- Warranty in writing. Separately for the shutter, the motor, the install workmanship. Each should be 5+ years for a fair quote.
Price benchmark for 2026 in capital cities:
- Standard manual shutter (1500 × 1500): $550-$900 fair range
- Standard electric shutter with quality motor: $900-$1,400 fair range
- 6-window package with mix: $5,000-$8,500 fair range
Red flags:
- "Today-only" pricing or aggressive close-out tactics. Fair installers don't expire quotes in 24 hours.
- No company ABN or vague address.
- Cash-only or "10% off if you pay cash".
- A quote that's 40%+ cheaper than the others. They're cutting a corner somewhere (slats, motor, install, or warranty).
- A quote that's 40%+ more expensive than the others without listing premium features. They're just expensive.
If two quotes are within 10% of each other, choose the installer you like better. References, photos of recent jobs, and a clean Google review history beat a marginal price difference.
