Do roller shutters reduce noise?

Editorial guide · Updated 16 Aug 2026
Shut The Front Up editorial answer

They may reduce some outside noise, but a roller shutter is not an acoustic-performance guarantee. The result depends on the complete opening: glass, frame, seals, wall, shutter curtain and guides, installation gaps, ventilation openings, and the frequency and direction of the noise.

Feature, advantage, benefit and limitation

  • A second barrier outside the window. It adds another layer between the source and the room. Some households may notice less noise when the shutter is fully closed. The limitation is that sound can still travel through glass, frames, walls, roofs and gaps.
  • Well-fitted guides and perimeter details. They can reduce leakage around the shutter system. This is useful only as part of the complete opening; a tight shutter does not fix an open or poorly sealed window behind it.
  • Motorised operation. It may make closing the shutter practical for sleep or shift work. Ask about motor noise inside the room and manual or emergency operation.

Noise type matters. Low-frequency traffic or aircraft rumble behaves differently from higher-frequency voices, and a perceived improvement in one home does not establish a decibel result in another. If noise control is the main buying reason, ask for a test report covering the exact complete system, test method and configuration. Do not rely on an uncited percentage or a demonstration in a different building.

The Australian Government's YourHome noise-control guide emphasises that closed, well-sealed windows matter and identifies double glazing and laminated glass as effective window strategies. Consider an acoustic assessment for severe road, rail or aircraft noise, and compare the shutter with glazing, seals and ventilation treatments before deciding.
