Are motorised blinds worth it?

Yes. For some windows. The honest answer is motorise the blinds you actually use daily, manual on the ones you set and forget.

1. High or hard-to-reach windows. Stairwell, double-height living room, above kitchen splashbacks. Anywhere you'd otherwise need a ladder or a long pole.
2. Wide windows. Anything over 2400 mm is heavy and tedious to operate manually.
3. Big multi-blind banks. If your living room has 4 blinds across, a single remote-or-app press dropping them all together is genuinely transformative.
4. Scheduled drops. Want them down at 11 am to keep heat out and back up at sunset? That only works reliably if they're motorised.
5. Bedrooms for shift workers / parents of small kids. No fumbling for a chain at 3 am.
6. Mobility-restricted households. Massive accessibility benefit.

Where motorised blinds are a waste:

• Small bathroom and laundry windows you basically leave closed.
• Holiday-home windows nobody uses for nine months a year.
• Anywhere without nearby power and a single blind. The battery / solar premium isn't worth it for one window.

Power options:

• Hard-wired: most reliable, needs a sparky during install. Cheapest motors.
• Rechargeable battery: most flexible. USB-C charge every 6-12 months. Easy retrofit.
• Solar: best for north-facing blinds in sunny states. Slightly higher upfront, near-zero maintenance.

A 5-year-warranty motor from Somfy or Becker is well worth the extra over a generic motor that fails outside warranty. Always ask the brand and warranty length specifically.
